Helmet to helmet...makes no sense

How often do you see an RB or WR get hammered in the ear hole by a DB's helmet, yet no flag gets thrown?

Yet today, Troy Smith gets hit on the sideline, flag is thrown and 15 yards tacked onto the end of the run.

Much like the whole blow to the head deal. UT has been flagged for it at least twice this year where the contact was barely enough to move the QB's head.

the helmet to helmet hit in the vt game was definitely that, but........the offensive player had an equal part in the hit....he lowered his head as the defensive player did. the helmets hit no higher than 4 feet off the ground, so both had to have lowered their heads.

I see at least one a week in pro ball, more than that in college. If the guy is turned and running toward the defender it is a tougher call, BUT if it is a guy with his back turned, trying to catch the ball or a QB throwing, throw the guy out. It is the easiest way to stop this. The rule changes came down to the high schools complete with posters about "not leading with your helmant", several years ago.

OSU got that call because it was a legitimate helmet to helmet hit. It's not like that call won the game for them. They won because they were the better team.

Helmet to Helmet is dangerous trust me, I cracked my neck in my 10th grade yr during a game hitting with my helmet....and till this day I feel it in my neck and back...

But that helemt to helmet call kept the drive going and that scoring drice turned out to be enough to keep the Buckeyes on top

It should have kept the drive going, it was a legitimate hit.

It was legitimate helmet to helmet contact. The problem I have with call is that the QB was scrambling forward and not in a standing pocket position. To me, I do not find that fair to the defense because they are having to adjust to his movement also. Had it been a running back, it would have never been called. I think helmet to helmet should only be called on a defenseless player standing in a pocket, or in the air.

On second thought, it shouldn't be called at all. It should be called spearing in most cases but that ain't gonna happen.
